Essential guideline on Video Camera Housing

waterproof-video-camera Essential guideline on Video Camera Housing

Works very nicely and the Canon took great pictures that required less color correction than other point and shoot cameras I’ve used in the past. Most underwater photos need some color correction – usually the autocorrect, or lighting autocorrect, on Photoshop Elements or similar programs does it.

Is it an invasion of privacy when a video camera is watching your house?
I have an aunt who is having trouble with her neighbor. The neighbor is out to get her, and one way this neighbor is bothering my aunt would be with a video camera pointed at the side of my aunts house to watch every move she makes. This neighbor even calls my aunt to say Video Camera Housing she is watching her. The camera is not on my aunts property, but on the neighbors property, and my aunt doesn’t want to be watched and it is facing the bathroom window, the window isn’t really big, maybe 2ft by 2ft. Is that some how against the law, esspecially privacy laws? If it matters, she does live in Utah. I want to know because apparently the police won’t do anyhting about it. ThanxOkay, so all of you have pretty much said that it is harrasment to do what the neighbor is doing, I would like to know why the police won’t accept it as harrasment. They say that because the camera is on the neighbors property, that it isn’t harrasment, but isn’t it if she is calling my aunt?

Took it down to about 80ft with no issues. I did do a test dive with it first to make sure it didn’t leak. I do recommend buying some delicatessens (sp?) I used it once without, and when I put it down is some cooler water I noticed some condensation. Use the silicon like the instructions say. Just be careful and keep the seal clean and you shouldn’t have an issue!

Love this thing! Must have for a G11

So far I have used this in my backyard swimming pool and in the surf of the Pacific Ocean. Works great! It’s build quality is excellent and it gives you access to all of your camera’s functionality. My only minor complaint it that it is a bit difficult to do the half-press of the shutter so you can grab focus and metering. Hopefully it will get easier with practice.

I purchased this case for my new Canon G11 and had used it for 7 days on a 14 day dive trip, cleaning and greasing the o-ring after each dive. On the 8th day, I noticed some drops of water on the inside of the case during a dive. I brought it up and took it straight to the dive table to dry and open it. I found 4 drops of water on the inside and a fine mist. I thoroughly dried and cleaned it and put it in a tank of water without the camera and found that it again had a few drops of water inside. So I discontinued the use during the rest of my dive trip. I got home today and called Canon and was told there is no warranty. They did finally tell me to mail it in to them and they would take a look at it, but may not be able to do anything about it. They also told me that no one has ever had a problem with this case, but as I looked on this page, I noticed there are others with problems and they have also called them in. So my faith in Canon products went downhill quickly. I had never had a Canon but after many recommendations decided to try this product and may truly regret it now.

I purchased this for a dive trip to the caymans, after 10 dives (thus far) it is holding up very well, Ive had it to a depth of 110 feet and no leaks have occurred. Use silcon on the O-ring and seal it in the room and then test it in a tub of water for leaks before submerging and you should not have any problems, 2 more dives to go.

I wish I had purchased this a few years ago when I went backpacking around Europe. I wasted money on 4 disposable point and shoot cameras for underwater use, and only ONE picture turned out. The benefits of having your own digital camera outweighs the cost of this unit. If you take a picture underwater, you can delete it, as this case allows you to use all the controls on the camera. And, you have a nice big screen to look at instead of a optical viewfinder.

First, this case is made for your specific model. If you don’t know what WP-DCxx model you need, go to Canon’s website to look it up. But, DONT BUY IT ON THERE! I spent [...] bucks less on Amazon’s site than I would have buying it directly from Canon.

I purchased this for use in a week for my honeymoon, so I haven’t used it submerged in deep ocean water. However, I’ve soaked it in water and tried it under streaming water and it works great. I don’t think you’ll really need the silicone grease if you’re not submerging it, though.

From my research, I heard that the unit may fog a little due to the heat of the camera and cold ambient water. I’ve read/heard of a few tips that can mitigate this. First, you can put some anti-fog on the interior glass by the camera lens. Another clever way around fog is to a desiccant packet in the case when using it. (Don’t put a huge one, but one of those packets that comes with electronics or some condiments. Problem solved.

You may also want to purchase the weight set so the unit doesn’t float underwater. It comes with a bunch of plates to screw onto the bottom of this unit to achieve neutral buoyancy. The set is kind of expensive, but from previous experience, it makes for a much more pleasant dive.

All in all, this is a great unit. Recommended for parents that want to take pictures of their kids in the pool, people who love to snorkel and dive, and beach bums who want to protect their cameras from sand.

    **** UPDATE ****

I just returned from my trip. This thing is awesome. I took at least 200 pictures and nearly all of them turned out great. They definitely fogged a bit when I was in the ocean. So, definitely use the desiccant packs or some sort of anti-fog. I ended up leaving my camera in the case, regardless of beach, pool, ocean. The the ability to see your viewfinder is great, and you get the advantage using it to take video. If you are on the beach or the ocean, definitely wash out the yellow gasket if you open it. Its amazing how sand gets into everything, but if you rinse it out, take out the yellow gasket and clean it, you will have no problems. A definite 5 star product.

  • Allbright :

This camera case was an invaluable asset to our honeymoon in French Polynesia. We got some amazing underwater pictures that just wouldn’t have been the same with a throw-away underwater camera (which we used on a previous trip). The case is very easy to use and the picture quality was perfect. I was a little unsure if spending the money on this would be worth it to us, but it DEFINITELY was.

  • Gaja :

I have had great luck with this case. Used it two years back to back and no issues at all with leaks or anything. Make sure you read the instructions and store it properly (not closed), so that it keeps pressure off the seal. Otherwise, lube it up occasionally to keep the rubber seal from getting dry and you have no problems.

  • Heaton :

I bought this camera box to take on a recent cruise, and I am AMAZED at the picture quality! Wow what a neat box that is easy to use and very functional. Make your settings, stick it in the case and go. We went to StingRay City in Cayman, and have the best pictures of the rays! I am extremely satisfied with the product, and have recommended it to everyone I know. Worth the money!!!!!!

  • Lobbins :

Can’t see blank without viewfinder shade esp in bright sun on ocean. Anyone know if a shade exists for this WP-DC17 case?

Or an attachable shade or other WP kit, or housing kit for the WP-DC17? Does the WP-DC1 model have a viewfinder shade and will a SD-870 ISO fit in it?

  • Gunter :

I recently came back from a scuba trip to Mexico. I thought it would be a good idea to take my camera under the sea, so I decided to try out this case. It sealed perfectly, and all the buttons and functions are as easily accessible as they are in the camera alone. It took me a while to figure out where the under water shooting mode was, since I did not take my manual, but, for anyone looking for it, it is in between the video shooting mode and the auto picture mode, and it tones down the color blue for a more natural tone. I personally liked the regular auto mode better as the underwater mode made it seem darker. And for night diving, the auto mode worked perfect because the pictures you can take are only from close targets, using diffused flash (diffuser included) or a flash light and the blue from the sun is not present.
They recommend you open the case, wash it and reseal it for every use, or at least every separate day you go to use it. I used it for three days straight without opening the case. The rubber seal and the silicone gel remained intact and not noticeable water entered the case, but on the last day, when I finally opened the camera I saw some dry droplets on the inside of the lens of the case. So if you’re taking the camera to a depth where pressure will be high, I would open it every day to clear out the moisture, though no water leaked in. The pictures and videos were great. Good product.

I bought this for a recent trip to Aruba. I used it while snorkeling, while in the pool and just hanging out at the beach. I was a little nervous because if the case leaked I would be out a great camera, but it works like a charm! You can’t even tell that the picture was taken with the case on, except for the occasional water drop that might show up.
It’s also great to use while on the beach so that you can be sure sand doesn’t get into the lenses.
The only thing I’m not a fan of is the attachment needed for when you use flash. I didn’t use it at all so it wasn’t a big issue. But I found that if that attachment was pushed all the way in, it was really hard to get it off. I tried it and was afraid I would have to break it. I eventually did and will be careful not to have it too tight. If you use flash though, you will need it. The shape of the case is a little weird so if you don’t use the attachment you’ll get shadowing in the corner. Wish they’d thought of that, little annoying to deal with, but doubt they will make another, since it’s only made for one specific camera.
But this is a great product! Works great. It’s a little expensive but if you want good underwater pictures I think it’s worth it.

  • Dou :

I cant say enough about this product. Canon did a wonderful job with it. I love using it. Construction is rock solid. Works perfect. It actually captures sound too when you do video under water, impressive!!! If I were to pick anything negative about it, it would be the fact that when you bring the case from under water to outside the water kind of streaks on the front lenses. Now this very well could be a common problem for any kind of water proof case. Plus I was using it mostly in the ocean. Easily clean out though. Bottom line: I would recommend it.

  • Fesler :

Other reviewers have noted that this waterproof case provides access to all control input on the S90, except for the rotation of the rear control wheel. While many of the features that can be invoked by the rear control wheel can be accessed in other ways, there are some features that _require_ rear wheel access, and that you should be aware of before enclosing the camera.

For example, on land, I had toyed with the video mode, where turning the rear wheel cycles between the three video options – standard, color accent, and color replacement. Without realizing it, I had left it on the color accent mode. After enclosing the camera in the case and taking into the water, I turned the mode-selection knob to video, and was stuck in color accent mode. I couldn’t find a way to the video back to standard mode, no matter what menus I looked in.

Just an FYI – before the camera goes into the case, be sure to adjust the rear-wheel-controlled-settings to where you want them, because you can’t replicate all the functionality of that wheel with the controls accessible through the case.

Otherwise, a great case, and highly recommended.

I had an olympus 770UZ and its case (don’t remember the name); I was used to the bulky, big and uncomfortable housing; whenever I went underwater I was in “christmas tree” mode, with that huge thing.
The Canon case is wonderful!!! I use it for snorkeling and it’s not bulky at all.
All the command but the ring in the back are accessible, but it’s not that of a trouble, I usually leave the aperture at 2 and use the front ring for exposure control, but this is just my opinion. The only *negative* thing that I can say is that there is no front cap and I am trying to find a solution to that.
For the other aspects, I am more more more than satisfied. I am actually planning to buy a spare one!

  • Everitt :

I used the housing to make several movies and pictures in the swimming pool with the kids and they love the results as much as I do. The build quality seems very good to me, and even the operation all of the camera’s features (except for the dial on the back of the camera, which is not a real issue to me) is extremely easy.
The lens glass is coated and my first impression is that it does not loose a lot of light compared to regular camera shots without the housing. Also water drips of easily from the coating, so out of water pictures are hardly disturbed by water drops on the housing lens.
I have not tested the housing to depth and I did not plan to do so. I just want to use it for swimming pool/beach use or snorkeling at max. And for that it is a lot of fun and adding an extra dimension to making pictures.
Regarding the price, it is difficult to say if it is really worth it. I can imagine that for snorkeling or diving this is a very good and price worthy alternative to more professional and more expensive solutions. For beach and swimming pool use it is a lot of money, but for me personally I have great new type of pictures and videos of my kids now that I normally would never have. My kids love watching them. So for me – in terms of creating new type of memories – it is definitely worth it and the housing is a cool thing to have.

  • Bennallack :

Well built, easy to use and I had no problem getting around the lack of a rear wheel. Major complaint, however, is that the housing does not readily adapt to a fiber optic connection…you have to sort of invent and jury-rig. The camera will also not TTL in manual. What were they thinking???

  • Ibarra :

Takes wonderful pictures and videos, easy to download to computer and view, underwater case works great, great value!

To use the dial all you need to do is hold down the “S” button and then press left or right (macro/flash)buttons and you are done… this is the way you can use the dial function with the camera inside the case!!!!!

I just wanted to add this information because i read on the other reviews everyone was complaining about not being able to use the dial function… the case is 100% a go!!!
