Do I need to buy the optional weight kit along with the housing to take my digital camera scuba diving?
Will I have bouyancy issues with my camera if I just skip the weights and get an underwater casing alone? I have a Canon PowerShot A630 camera I’d like to take diving.

To use the dial all you need to do is hold down the “S” button and then press left or right (macro/flash)buttons and you are done… this is the way you can use the dial function with the camera inside the case!!!!!
I just wanted to add this information because i read on the other reviews everyone was complaining about not being able to use the dial function… the case is 100% a go!!!
First off, I love Canon Powershots because of the image quality and design and function. But secondly, I love Canons because they make the best underwater housings for most of their models. They are good to 130ft, which is better than most. And, really, most recreational divers would have little reason to dive beyond 130ft. I have taken it to as deep as 91ft. I shot some amazing video in addition to still shots, and everything on this housing works the way it should. The flash diffuser (the translucent piece that attached around the lens port) is very helpful in improving the quality of your flash shots by softening the light. For any recreational use, especially if you are a diver, this is a must have. And it is way cheaper than getting an Ikelite housing, for example. Unless you must have external strobes. I’ll also use the housing when I am in adverse conditions, just to protect it sometimes. It’s a bit bulky to bring with you on trips, but any housing would be. This one is pretty compact if you put it on that scale.
This housing is a great value. It cost about 1/3 of other housings but works fine. I have taken it on one dive trip and got in about 22 dives with it so my durability rating is based on that. The housing is positive buoyant so if you like your housings neutral or negative add quite a bit of weight. It is very positive so keep this in mind. I did not have a strobe on this trip and got some very good shots.

Very good item. I would have put 5 stars if the flood screen had been part of the box. Not a flimbsy detachable thin plastic.
Other reviewers have noted that this waterproof case provides access to all control input on the S90, except for the rotation of the rear control wheel. While many of the features that can be invoked by the rear control wheel can be accessed in other ways, there are some features that _require_ rear wheel access, and that you should be aware of before enclosing the camera.
For example, on land, I had toyed with the video mode, where turning the rear wheel cycles between the three video options – standard, color accent, and color replacement. Without realizing it, I had left it on the color accent mode. After enclosing the camera in the case and taking into the water, I turned the mode-selection knob to video, and was stuck in color accent mode. I couldn’t find a way to the video back to standard mode, no matter what menus I looked in.
Just an FYI – before the camera goes into the case, be sure to adjust the rear-wheel-controlled-settings to where you want them, because you can’t replicate all the functionality of that wheel with the controls accessible through the case.
Otherwise, a great case, and highly recommended.
I used the housing to make several movies and pictures in the swimming pool with the kids and they love the results as much as I do. The build quality seems very good to me, and even the operation all of the camera’s features (except for the dial on the back of the camera, which is not a real issue to me) is extremely easy.
The lens glass is coated and my first impression is that it does not loose a lot of light compared to regular camera shots without the housing. Also water drips of easily from the coating, so out of water pictures are hardly disturbed by water drops on the housing lens.
I have not tested the housing to depth and I did not plan to do so. I just want to use it for swimming pool/beach use or snorkeling at max. And for that it is a lot of fun and adding an extra dimension to making pictures.
Regarding the price, it is difficult to say if it is really worth it. I can imagine that for snorkeling or diving this is a very good and price worthy alternative to more professional and more expensive solutions. For beach and swimming pool use it is a lot of money, but for me personally I have great new type of pictures and videos of my kids now that I normally would never have. My kids love watching them. So for me – in terms of creating new type of memories – it is definitely worth it and the housing is a cool thing to have.
Well built, easy to use and I had no problem getting around the lack of a rear wheel. Major complaint, however, is that the housing does not readily adapt to a fiber optic connection…you have to sort of invent and jury-rig. The camera will also not TTL in manual. What were they thinking???
I had an olympus 770UZ and its case (don’t remember the name); I was used to the bulky, big and uncomfortable housing; whenever I went underwater I was in “christmas tree” mode, with that huge thing.
The Canon case is wonderful!!! I use it for snorkeling and it’s not bulky at all.
All the command but the ring in the back are accessible, but it’s not that of a trouble, I usually leave the aperture at 2 and use the front ring for exposure control, but this is just my opinion. The only *negative* thing that I can say is that there is no front cap and I am trying to find a solution to that.
For the other aspects, I am more more more than satisfied. I am actually planning to buy a spare one!
This product is for sure one of the best purchases for your money. It works like a charm. I didn’t want to spend crazy amounts of money on a waterproof camera since I already had perfectly good working camera. And I didn’t want to use a throw away camera, because they just don’t have the same quality photo.
I hesitantly gave my camera in the case to my niece and nephew when we were in the pool area with the DicaPac. After hours of fun. Still the camera is dry as a bone!!! Only issue I have is that once in a while if your not holding the camera properly, you’ll get a funny shadow from the lens case. But you can always photo shop or crop it out. This item is the best thing I have bought in years for my camera!
It’s very handy, also 100% water proof. I used it when rafting. There was no single drop of water inside the bag.My compact camera (Canon Titanium) fits the bag perfectly. There was no problem with the lens.
Didn’t want to spend a lot of money for a hard case. Took this waterproof bag on a recent cruise in the Caribbean and it worked awesome! Kept my camera dry and I got some amazing pictures. Excellent value. The instructions aren’t very clear, but it is easy to figure out how to use the bag.
I was kind of hesitant to use this product but was convinced by the positive reviews.
All in all it worked fantastic! Just make sure you follow the instructions to TEST the unit.
The only reason I gave it three stars is that the neckstrap part of the product was starting to rip off from gentle use. I had to glue it back on! :’(
Also many of pictures came out blurry because of water droplets on the lens area, and part of the lens holder got in the way creating a sort of vignette on the picture.
Anyways, good product, pretty good quality and worth the money!
I purchased this product to take on vacation and loved it.
This saved me from having to purchase a waterproof camera(disposable or digital).
I stayed in the water for hours each day and was happy with the results.
Just got back from a trip to Hawaii where I used this product extensively.
The vast majority of my pictures came out great! Those that didn’t were not because of the case, more because of conditions (not enough light, couldn’t frame the image because I was moving, etc). I did experience a few shots that had the lens ring in them, but with care that’s avoidable. Just FYI, taking pictures underwater is not the easiest thing to do. Most of the time you just point in the general direction and hope something comes out. But being able to do this with my regular digital camera was awesome. Many tourists had bought the disposable underwater cameras, but those require film to be developed, so you have no idea what your pictures look like for a while. For the same costs of one of those cameras, you can get this case!
Not the be-all end-all of products, but for the price it’s hard to beat.
It worked great and my pictures turned out except some had water drops on them. The camera stayed dry.
This is a glorified ziploc bag, but it works as expected!
It is cheaper than a hard case, the build quality seems to be ok (not sure it would last years). Overall, the product works as advertised. Used with an SD1000 and as others have pointed out, the black ring *will* appear in your photos, this may take some practice and/or extra padding to center the lens. Also, as others have said be careful when opening as water might drip to camera.
We will be using for submerging the camera and as such will store safely to avoid any unwanted punctures on it. I guess if you are traveling, simply don’t throw this in your bag, you may want to be careful and have a little case for the camera case. I know it sounds redundant, but if the only use is for submerging it is a simple way of avoiding unwanted perforations because I doubt anyone would repeat the dry-test before using every time…
Overall, great buy. Happy with results, and it isn’t perfect but for the price you can’t beat it.
